We were pleased to be invited to the Integrated Climate Action Network (I-CAN) meeting in Fermanagh to present Sustainable NI’s new sustainability screening tool – the Sustainability Compass.
The Sustainability Compass is an intuitive online tool designed by Sustainable Northern Ireland to help public bodies assess the environmental and social impacts of projects, plans, and investments. With a simple interface, it provides practical tips to improve sustainability, supports progress tracking, and generates clear summary reports for both capital and non-capital projects.
The I-CAN network was established in May 2024 to bring together Community Planning partners in coordinating climate action in line with the Climate Change Act (NI) 2022 and forthcoming Public Body Reporting (PBR) requirements. Meeting quarterly, the group fosters collaboration, shared learning, and alignment toward net zero.
An initial workshop identified four priority areas – Fleet, Estate, PBR, and Behaviour Change & Training. In January 2025, members agreed the Terms of Reference, with the Western Health and Social Care Trust confirmed as Co-Lead.
A baseline survey of partner organisations revealed that all had calculated their Scope 1 and 2 emissions, while one-third had assessed Scope 3 emissions – which can account for up to 95% of total emissions in local authorities. This insight is now being used to inform priorities and shape opportunities for shared initiatives.
Key meetings have since focused on fleet decarbonisation, EV infrastructure, and practical energy solutions, including Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a case study. A SharePoint information-sharing platform is also in development to enhance collaboration and support reporting.
Looking ahead, I-CAN will continue to build on this strong foundation, supporting public bodies across Northern Ireland in working together toward ambitious climate action goals.
