VINCI Airports, which owns Belfast International Airport, has advanced their plans for a major new solar farm in an effort to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency.
A planning application has been submitted for a solar installation of up to 24MW on land located one kilometre from the main terminal, between Seareach Road and British Road, Crumlin.
The application has been made by an agent on behalf of renewable energy company SunMind.
The project forms part of a £100 million five-year investment programme aimed at enhancing the airport's infrastructure and environmental performance. Once operational the solar farm is expected to reduce carbon emissions by ~12,500 tonnes CO2 annually.
By generating energy on site, airports can reduce their reliance on fossil fuel sources while improving cost control and resilience to energy price fluctuations.
