The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has launched a public appointment process to establish Northern Ireland’s new Just Transition Commission.

The Commission will include a Chair and 15 members representing sectors including academia, agriculture, energy, transport, green finance, trade unions, youth and environmental groups.

Its role will be to provide independent advice to Northern Ireland departments and support the implementation of just transition provisions under the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.

The Commission will help ensure that climate action is delivered in a way that reduces emissions while also supporting workers, communities and sectors through the transition to a low-carbon economy.

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir described the Commission as an important step in Northern Ireland’s climate action journey, highlighting its role in supporting fair and inclusive climate policy development.

Completed applications must be submitted to the Department by noon on Thursday 25 June 2026.

More information on the role and responsibilities is available via DAERA. Additionally, information on the competition and how to apply can be found at nidirect.
