Project Overview

Funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), Sustainable NI jointly delivered a project in partnership with Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful between 2018 - 2021 that aimed to tackle consumer single-use plastic, by encouraging a range of sectors to make simple changes to reduce their consumption of single use plastic.

Sustainable NI led the public sector programme, supporting and encouraging councils to work with government departments to change policies and practices to ban or phase out single use plastic on their estates and at their events. Sustainable NI led the public sector programme, supporting and encouraging councils to work with government departments to change policies and practices to ban or phase out single use plastic on their estates and at their events. Sustainable NI developed a Tackling Plastic Toolkit for the public sector providing template policies and guidance to help monitor and accelerate the removal of single use plastic from the public sector estate.

We supported the development of a Plastic Reduction Action Plan for the Northern Ireland Civil Service, which introduced a mandatory ban on single use plastic on the government estate.
