Consultation on establishing a Just Transition Commission
Views sought to create a body to oversee the transition to a low-carbon society and economy in a fair and just way.
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has launched a consultation on establishing a Just Transition Commission for Northern Ireland.
A just transition means ensuring that the transition to a net zero society is one where the costs and the benefits of decarbonisation and the removal of greenhouse gases from our atmosphere are shared equitably across the economy and society and that no one is left behind.
Responses to this consultation will be used to inform the work being conducted by DAERA to establish the public body, as well as inform the new Commission of the views of the public as to what duties and responsibilities are seen as being important in conducting its role.
This consultation will focus on the proposals to establish the Commission including:
- the type of public body the Commission should be
- its composition
- the Commission’s role and legislated functions
- the proposed sectors to be represented
- its reporting arrangements
- the secretariat and support required
