Sustainable Northern Ireland's conference - Sense and Sustainability: Financing the Path to Sustainability in a Tough Economy, could not have been timelier. The economic downturn presents an amazing opportunity for society to step up efforts towards sustainability. We need to make radical changes if the global financial meltdown is to be resolved. The argument for including social and environmental considerations in all spending decisions must be sound, bedded in fact and provide value for money.
We need to be able to demonstrate why a sustainable society is imperative to enable us to have a sustainable economy. On a practical level we want the opportunity to demonstrate to communities, businesses and government how local food production, transition towns, energy efficiency, waste reduction and city farms can all contribute to reducing the financial burdens brought on by the credit crunch and higher energy prices.
