SNI 5 Year Business planSustainable Northern Ireland is a limited company registered as a charity established in 1997 to assist district councils, the community and voluntary sector, central government departments and agencies, non departmental public bodies, the business sector and the public in understanding, promoting and encouraging the adoption of sustainable principles in all aspects of our lives.


Our Mission

Sustainable Northern Ireland's mission is:

"Together with our partners to strive towards making Northern Ireland sustainable by creating a secure future built on a steadfast sustainable development framework"


Our Vision

Sustainable Northern Ireland's five year business plan has been developed to demonstrate how we will work to achieve a vision of Northern Ireland that includes:

"An integrated and equal society based on the principles of sustainable development"


Our Aims and Objectives

Aim ONE

To encourage government to create a strong legislative, policy and implementation framework for sustainable development in Northern Ireland

Objective A

To encourage government to embed sustainable development principles at the heart of all decisions made.

Objective B

To be an active sustainable development stakeholder with central government.

Objective C

To participate in active dialogue with government officials, elected members and Members of the Legislative Assembly.

Aim TWO

To inspire, communicate, demonstrate and influence sustainable development policies and practices

Objective D

To effectively communicate a coherent and consistent message of sustainable development to all stakeholders.

Objective E

To respond to the needs of local government to understand sustainable development and its constituent elements.

Objective F

To support public authorities integrate sustainable development into a framework enabling them to more effectively represent the people they serve.

Aim THREE

To provide public authorities with support, guidance and knowledge to integrate sustainable development into their policies, practices and operations

Objective G

To produce guidance for public authorities on how to integrate sustainable development within their corporate planning mechanisms.

Objective H

To demonstrate the benefits of the SAM as a mechanism to improve council performance and efficiency across all areas of measurement within the SAM.

Objective I

To advise local government on the links between sustainable development, Community Planning and the Power of Well-being.

Aim FOUR

To encourage greater community participation through more sustainable lifestyle choices

Objective J

To promote more sustainable lifestyles in local communities through ecological foot printing techniques.

Objective K

To help integrate actions by the business sector with actions by public authorities and local communities to create a coherent approach to SD.

Objective L

To collate and share information on sustainable development progress across all sectors in Northern Ireland to help co-ordinate actions.
